Antarctica

Includes European discovery and Australian exploration of the Antarctic continent, subantarctic islands and the Southern Ocean, particularly the Australian Antarctic Territory; the search for the Great South Land through to current research and travel.

Colonial history

Covers events that occurred during the period from the first European settlement in 1788 to Federation in 1901. It includes the development of NSW and its relationship with other Australian states and territories and the rest of the world.

European voyages

Covers voyages from the sixteenth through to the mid-nineteenth centuries relating to the European discovery of Australia and the exploration of the Australian coastline. It includes the voyages of discovery in the South Pacific region.

Exploration

Covers attempts to penetrate the interior of Australia to open it up for occupation and development; includes the investigation and documentation of the coastal and interior regions of the continent from the first European expeditions.

Geography

Covers the topographical and physical features of the earth's surface relating to Australia, especially NSW; includes the Pacific region, the Antarctic continent, subantarctic islands and the Southern Ocean and the interaction between land and people.

Local history

Covers the history of people, places and events defined by a geographical area in NSW, including towns, cities, local government and regions; includes local organisations, the characteristics and culture of the place, and people in the local community.

Participation in wars

Covers the activities and experiences of Australian servicemen and women in conflicts and peacekeeping missions at home and around the world, with an emphasis on NSW units and individuals; includes the impact of war on life in Australia, especially NSW.

Post-federation history

Covers events that have occurred in NSW since 1901. It includes the development of the State of NSW and its evolving relationship with other Australian States and Territories in the context of the Commonwealth of Australia and the rest of the world.

Transportation

Covers services and facilities moving people or freight in Australia, particularly NSW; includes methods and systems of transportation, administration of services, design and construction of infrastructure including vehicles, roads, stations, bridges.
