Surveillance

The State Library's surveillance practices are governed by the Workplace Surveillance Act 2005 (NSW) and privacy legislation.

Camera Surveillance

The State Library is equipped with both internal and external CCTV cameras, positioned at various locations throughout the Library complex, and connected to video image recording equipment. The State Library will collect personal information via camera surveillance (CCTV) to:

  • ensure a safe environment for visitors and staff
  • ensure the security of the Library's collections.

The State Library's CCTV equipment is monitored on a continuous basis, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Camera recordings are kept for limited time to investigate reported incidents.

CCTV footage of a specific incident may be released to a law enforcement agency where it is required or permitted by law.

Hidden surveillance cameras will not be used unless permitted by a court order.

Computer Surveillance

The State Library monitors all of its ICT equipment on a continuous and ongoing basis to:

  • ensure the security of data and the network
  • enable efficient management of ICT resources
  • prevent unlawful and unacceptable use of ICT equipment.

The State Library's internet system maintains an activity log of all web sites visited, the computer used, the date and time when web sites were accessed and records the name entered into the Client Reservation Information Screen.
Activity logs are used for troubleshooting purposes and are backed up and retained for up to 7 years.

The State Library may provide data access to a law enforcement agency where it is required or permitted by law.
