Title page of Mr. William Shakespeares comedies, histories & tragedies : published according to the true originall copies. (First Folio)

William Shakespeare was born in 1564. He was baptised on 26 April 1564 and his birthday is traditionally celebrated on 23 April, which is also the anniversary of his death.

The photograph above shows the title page of the First Folio.

The State Library of New South Wales holds a copy of all four Folios. The Library’s copy of the first folio is the only known copy in Australia.

We’re celebrating the birth of William Shakespeare 451 years ago by showcasing our rare First Folio. Including 36 of the Bard’s original plays,this rare volume will be on display alongside the Library’s copies of the Second, Third and Fourth Folios. Visitors can also speak to the Library’s rare books expert, Maggie Patton, who will share fascinating stories including the near loss of 18 of Shakespeare’s original plays and how the Library came to possess the First Folio.
