On this day, 7th September 1876, C. J. Dennis, was born.

Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis, better known as C. J. Dennis, was an Australian poet known for his humorous poems, in particular “The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke”, which sold 65,000 copies in its first year. By 1917 Dennis was the most prosperous poet in Australian history.

Other titles include The Glugs of Gosh (1917), The Moods of Ginger Mick (1916) Backblock Ballads and Other Verses (1913), Jim of the Hills (1919) Digger Smith (1918)

His collected works were published by Angus and Robertson and many shorter works were also published in various Australian newspapers and magazines.

The State Library of New South Wales holds first editions of his works and the original drawings for his books by Hal Gye.
