It is International Women’s Day. Australian woman Vida Goldstein (1869-1949) was the first woman in the British Empire to stand for Parliament. Australian women’s right to vote in the federal elections had only just been won the year before, in 1902.

Miss Goldstein was a staunch supporter and vocal member of the women’s suffrage movement. Miss Goldstein published and edited The Australian Woman’s Sphere which, as Miss Goldstein pointed out, was not to be “a dull paper”

The State Library of NSW has digitised a collection of The Australian Woman’s Sphere for our Visionaries project.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the State Library of NSW is holding a Film Screening, “Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines”
