Question of the Week

A client from Finland visited the State Library’s Family history service last week looking for information about her great grand uncle. All she knew was that he arrived in Australia in the 1920s, married here and then disappeared during World War 11.

We found an article from the West Australian on 8 June 1942 on Trove which said that he was a missing Freemantle man from the crew of an Australian freighter torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the raids on Sydney. Another article referred to him being charged with deserting a Finnish ship in the 1920s. He fled the civil war in Finland.
