On this day, 15 June 1792, Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell was born.

Mitchell was a highly significant figure in Australian colonial history. An explorer, surveyor, road-builder and mapmaker, he served as Surveyor General of New South Wales from 1828 until his death in 1855.

The State Library of New South Wales holds a large collection of manuscripts relating to Sir Thomas Mitchell, including his personal papers, diaries and many other items relating to his life and work. There is also a significant collection of maps.
