On March 16, 1826, the Australian Subscription Library was founded.

This later became the Free Public Library of New South Wales, the forerunner of the State Library of New South Wales and the first truly public library for the people of NSW. Read about the History of the Library

The Australian Subscription Library did not have a real home until 1845, when the building depicted above was completed, situated on the corner of Bent St and Macquarie St, Sydney, near where Aurora Place now stands.
