On this day, 30 November 1835, the American author Samuel L Clemens (aka Mark Twain) was born.

He is well known for his works The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

In September 1895, Samuel Clemens visited Sydney for a series of lectures. This photograph, from the State Library of New South Wales collections, was taken in Sydney during his visit.
