On this day, 9th August 1899, P. L. Travers (Pamela Lyndon), the author of the Mary Poppins books, was born, Helen Lyndon Goff, in Queensland, Australia.

Helen Lyndon Goff emigrated to England in 1924, and began to write under the pen name P. L. Travers. In 1933 she began writing the novel Mary Poppins, first of the Poppins books. She published the story in 1934, and it was an instant success. Five more books in the series followed over the ensuing years, the last being Mary Poppins and the House Next Door in 1989, all with illustrations by Mary Shepard (daughter of the original illustrator of Winnie the Pooh).

The State Library of New South Wales holds a large collection of personal papers and sound recordings relating to P L Travers plus illustrations for Mary Poppins by Mary Shepard.
