Cemetery Records

Once you have the official death certificate you may like to find what information is on the gravestone inscription or in a cemetery record of your ancestor.

Search cemetery records to find biographical information and other details such as where they are buried, who is buried in the same plot and their relationship. The information in the records varies from cemetery to cemetery but most records include the deceased’s name and their date of birth and death.

We have cemetery records from all over New South Wales in our collections. Search our catalogue using the place and the word ‘cemeteries’ eg. Goulburn cemeteries

You may also browse the cemetery shelves in the Family History Area in the State Reference Library, Lower Ground 2.

Remember that the State Library has many cemetery indexes on CD-ROM and links to websites. Check our Research Guide to Births, Deaths and Marriages and our eresources page (selecting “Cemeteries, Australia”)
