On this day, 16th October 1863, Daisy Bates, the Irish-born Australian journalist, welfare worker, anthropologist and lifelong student of Australian aboriginal culture and society, was born.

Daisy Bates played a key role in ensuring that the Tasman Map came to the State Library of New South Wales collections.

Daisy Bates married Breaker Morant (the horseman, balladist and soldier) in 1884. Their marriage certificate is held at the State Library of New South Wales.
