On this day, 6th August 1809, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the English Poet Laureate of the Victorian period, was born.

The State Library of New South Wales holds many editions and copies of Tennyson’s works, including this exquisite edition of Idylls of the King, illustrated in colour by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, published in 1918

This copy is number 67 of a limited edition of 350 copies, signed by the author, and part of our Rare Books collection. Other early editions of Tennyson’s works are held by the State Library of NSW, including an embellished 1851 copy of In Memoriam, with painted fore-edges.
