Harp Hotel, Wollongong, 1918 / John Campbell

William Woods and his wife Margaret Jane Kenna ran the Harp Hotel in Wollongong from 1913-1919. It is believed that Agnes, one of their twelve children, is the girl on the upper balcony.

Western Australian artist John Campbell painted this picture of the hotel, which was kept by the Woods family until 1964 when they sold it to the Mitchell Library.

The State Library of New South Wales began a major retrospective cataloguing project in 2008 to create over 1 million electronic records and provide access to many of the treasures in our collection. As the project draws to a close, we are highlighting some of the gems found along the way in this “Discoveries in the Stacks” series.
