Blog post from Tuesday, 8 July, 2014

On this day, 8th July 1904, the streets of Sydney were lit by electricity for the first time. The Pyrmont Power Station (pictured) was officially switched on by a gold switch which was especially commissioned for the occasion (now in the Powerhouse Museum).

The State Library of New South Wales holds photographs of early electric power stations, including Pyrmont.

A history of the coming of electricity to Sydney can be found in Electrifying Sydney 100 years of Energy Australia 2004.
