Port Jackson, from the journal of William Bradley, A Voyage to New South Wales, 1802.

On this day in 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip and a small group of other members of the First Fleet explored Sydney Harbour. They decided that it would be a better site for the new penal settlement. Phillip called it “the finest harbour in the world”.

They encountered the Eora people and made contact with them. Phillip’s instructions were to treat the Aboriginal people well, however conflict began early in the life of the colony.
