On March 7 1832, the New South Wales Government Gazette was first issued. Prior to this date, official notices were printed in the Colony’s first newspaper, the Sydney Gazette. Government Gazettes contained the official notices of the NSW government, including proclamations of legislation, notices relating to transfers of land, establishment of agencies and senior government appointments.

The State Library of New South Wales holds a complete set of the NSW Government Gazettes and the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser.

Issues of the gazette from 1836-1851 are now digitised through the Victoria Government Gazette site.
