On this day in 1928, Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith touched down in Brisbane, Australia, following his successful crossing of the Pacific Ocean
This is an original finished flight chart from the first part of the Southern Cross trans-Pacific flight, with his navigator Harry Lyon’s annotations plotting the path of the aircraft. His ink inscriptions include the latitude and longitude, course, elapsed distance and distance remaining to Honolulu. Army radio beacons at San Francisco and Honolulu enabled the Southern Cross to maintain a steady bearing on this part of the flight.
