Library spaces: bringing people together

Last month the State Library was pleased to host Morten Schmidt from Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL) Architects in Denmark. Morten was in Australia to continue work with the State Library of  Victoria on their redevelopment before heading off to New Zealand to the SHL designed Christchurch Central Library which is currently being built.

We took the opportunity to put together a full program around Morten’s visit. Attendees heard about new library developments and refurbishment of smaller libraries. Annie Hensley from fjmt studio presented on the Prefabricated and library modules project.

Some interesting points raised from the libraries include:

  • Get staff involved and take them on the journey with you
  • Be flexible - if something doesn’t work, change it
  • When working with developers, be prepared to make quick decisions but expect delays and times where you need to compromise
  • Surprises will always surprise you

Videos for all presentations are available via Bluejeans. We are working to make these fully accessible. In the meantime please contact Kate O’Grady if you would like to view the presentations.
