The Longest Reign in British History
September 9, 2015 represents an extraordinary milestone. It is the day on which Elizabeth II becomes the longest-reigning monarch in British history, the day on which she breaks the record, held for more than a century by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.
Queen Victoria’s reign of 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes – 63 years and seven months – defined an era and a people.
Queen Elizabeth II has witnessed and served through extraordinary events and changes into the modern era. A total of 12 British prime ministers and six Archbishops of Canterbury have served under her. She has visited Australia many times, her first tour occurred in 1954, and she officially opened the Macquarie St wing of the State Library of New South Wales in 1988.
