Newcastle, birds eye view, 1874 / drawn by A.C. Cooke, engraved by S. Calvert

Supplement to the Sydney Illustrated News April, 1875. Engraved on plate ‘A.C. Cooke 1874’ on left, 'Calvert’ on right. 1 print : wood engraving ; 14 ¾ x 22 in.

Popularly included as a supplement (like a poster insert) in the illustrated newspapers of the time, birds eye views like this were not only of interest and information to local audiences but to European an other international audiences to whom they were often exported. These intricate engravings were made from large wooden blocks-often assembled in parts and bolted together.
