In what will be of great interest to sports historians, footy fanatics and genealogists alike, the Library’s set of The Rugby League News, 1920-1954, has been digitised and made searchable online as part of the Library’s Digital Excellence Program, a major initiative of the NSW Government.
The Rugby League News was the official match program and news magazine of the New South Wales Rugby League. It was published weekly during the rugby league season and packed with team photos, news and gossip as well as the official team line-ups for each match.
Some of the digitised issues feature hand-written annotations by rugby league historian Tom Brock, whose personal collection forms an important part of the Library’s rugby league holdings. Tom would diligently scribble the weather conditions and the quality of the playing surface, and he would often add the scores of the matches he witnessed personally.
The National Rugby League Museum kindly allowed us to borrow copies of The Rugby League News that were missing from our collection.
The Rugby League News is available through Trove’s Journals, Articles and Data Sets portal. It's possible to browse issues by date , or to search for specific articles using a search page developed by tech guru Tim Sherratt.
