The Sydney Opera House opened on 20th October 1973

In 1956 the New South Wales government announced a competition to design the Sydney Opera House. Jorn Utzon was announced as the winner of the competition in January 1957.

The State Library of New South Wales has in its Rare Books Collections a copy of Jorn Utzon’s book Sydney National Opera House commonly known as the Red Book. This book has been digitised and is available to view online on the Library’s website. Inside the front cover is a dedication from the author:

I am happy that with this book I am able to give the Premier, the Right Honourable J. J. Cahill and the Opera House Committee a project which realises in a practical form the vision of the competition – Jorn Utzon.

The Library also holds the Jorn Utzon Sydney Opera House collection, 1956-1967. This collection includes 2,561 architectural drawings and 8 albums.
