Terra Australis - the Spanish quest for the Great Southern Land

Pedro Fernandes de Queirós was a navigator best known for his voyages of discovery in search of the great south land. He petitioned King Philip III of Spain repeatedly between 1607 and 1614 requesting funds to mount another expedition; he was eventually successful but died before he could organise the expedition.

The State Library of NSW holds a copy of all known surviving petitions, known as Memorials. Find out more about them and read digitised copies here.
