Latest update

Tuesday 14 March 2017

The old Manuscripts & Pictures catalogue has now been decommissioned. From today access to the State Library's unique collections is through our single search catalogue.

You can still search directly in the new Manuscripts, Oral Histories and Pictures catalogue but we encourage you to first try the single search catalogue as it offers a more powerful search.

In some cases information may not yet display in full however staff are working hard to improve displays so that all information about our archival collections is visible. Please be assured all data, including collection record information and digitised images, will be added to the new catalogue as we work through this transition process.

New features

  • Enhanced searching and record display for archival items
  • New facets for archival formats

Coming soon

  • Browsing digital images from the single search catalogue.

While these improvements are rolled out you can search for Digital Content here.

PREVIOUS UPDATES

Tuesday 7 March 2017

To allow for additional improvements to the single search catalogue for original material records, and further testing of the systems, our catalogue change over date will now be Tuesday 14 March.

This means that the old Manuscripts, Oral History and Pictures catalogue will now be decommissioned from 14-18 March. We encourage you use the single search catalogue as it provides the most powerful search. You can still, however, search directly in the new Manuscripts, Oral History and Pictures catalogue.

Please be assured that no data, whether it be collection record information or digitised images, has been lost in our catalogue transition process. In some cases information is not yet displaying in full, however we are working very hard to improve these displays so that all information is visible as soon as possible.

Collection viewer update

A new look Collection Viewer is now in place. It includes an improved display and layout which ensures the image information is more readily visible on the screen.

Wednesday 1 March 2017

In 2017 you will see the last major change to our catalogue as we will transition to a single search where you should start all your searches.

We will also be slowly decommissioning the previous versions of our catalogues which are now out of date. The old Manuscripts, Oral History and Pictures catalogue will become unavailable from 8 March 2017. The old catalogue of published materials will remain available for some time to come, however please be aware the information is not up-to-date.

For tips on searching our new single search catalogue please see below.

Where should I start my search from 8 March?
We encourage you to start in the single search Catalogue as it provides a more powerful search across the entire collection and will allow you to discover recent material, including new acquisitions. However you can search directly in the new Manuscripts, Oral History and Pictures catalogue.

How do I search archival/original material in the new single search catalogue?
You can choose to limit your search to archival material by choosing ‘Manuscripts, oral history and pictures’ from the drop-down options.

Monday 5 December 2016

Creating a single access system for the Library’s vast and diverse collection has been a huge undertaking, and one that will ultimately fulfil our aim of improving the way you search across the collection and easily find the information you seek.

Since implementation earlier this year we have experienced technical challenges which have impacted and prolonged a full transition to the new system. This, along with our need to reorganise the collection, has impacted on how you access many parts of the collection.

To understand how best to access the collection during this interim period, here are some key points to note:

  • We need some more time to update our computer catalogues to reflect the collection movements, so you may not always reliably find the current location of material. This work should be completed in the coming weeks.
  • In the meantime, if you need to access manuscripts collections it would be best to use the Access to Collections form on our website to request particular manuscripts before you visit the Library. We will keep you informed of our progress in this area and let you know as soon as the catalogue records have been updated.
  • Extracting and then ingesting data from the old systems into the new system has proved challenging and more complex than was first anticipated, which means we need to run the old and the new manuscripts, pictures and oral histories catalogues in tandem until this is resolved. We will regularly update the catalogues with information to help make navigation and searching easier.

We are preparing to release a number of updates to the new main catalogue which will be visible from Wednesday 7 December, including:

  • A clearer layout without tabs and improved formatting
  • Improving your experience on mobile devices
  • Moving facets (limits) to the right-hand side

Please note that the catalogue works best using Chrome or Firefox as your browser. If you are using Internet Explore you will need to update to the latest version (IE 11) to view the catalogue properly.
