Collecting Future History

The State Library chronicles life in NSW by collecting all manner of material.
Every one of the six million items in the Library’s collection has its own story, and together they tell the rich and diverse narrative of our state.

As Australia’s oldest library holding priceless artefacts, it’s tempting to think about the collection as purely historical.
In fact, the Library is tirelessly researching and gathering for the collection every day.

We have launched a unique campaign to highlight the things we collect while they are still out in the world. This is our Future History.

A restaurant menu, a festival poster, or a fashion magazine; our daily lives and the things around us are part of the larger story of our state.
Just as we marvel over the artefacts of the past, future generations will be fascinated by these things that surround us today.

Earmark for Future History campaign

Wherever you see this mark, you know that moment in time will be part of the collection forever.

Our interests and expressions, our choices and possessions, how we work, play and live today;
this is future history entrusted to the Library by you, the people of NSW.
