The State Library holds 53 newspaper titles in languages other than English. Our most popular papers are in Chinese, Italian and Arabic. According to the 2016 census, there are more than 1.2 million people of Chinese ancestry living in Australia. There were just over 1 million people with Italian ancestry, making it the sixth largest ethnic group in Australia. Arabic is the third most common language spoken at home in Australia, after English and Mandarin.
