Bank of New South Wales Sydney [George Street Sydney] c 1855
This painting of the corner George and Wynyard streets (now a small lane leading to Wynyard Park) depicts a branch of the Bank of New South Wales, with Thomas Garton’s drapery store shown on the right. The painting illustrates what was probably the most important commercial street in Sydney at the time.
Unusually, the title appears on the front of the canvas, as with a number of other views of Sydney painted around this time. Presumably these paintings were tourist images, offered by a commercial Sydney artist to illustrate important Sydney views.
