He was aged 42 when he enlisted and embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A68 Anchises, 8 August 1917. He served with the 16th Reinforcements of the 4th Divisional Signallers in France and Belgium, 1917-1918. He returned to Australia Nov. 1918 and was discharged as medically unfit
