Millicent Preston-Stanley1950

by Mary Edwards (Edwell-Burke)

Mary Edwards painted this portrait of Millicent Preston-Stanley which was a finalist in the 1950 Archibald Prize. Two years later Edwards added a pair of blue spectacles to the portrait, to match those the sitter then wore. The update was made in time for the reopening of the Feminist Club of which Stanley was the new president.

A campaigner for women’s rights throughout her life, Stanley was the first female member of the NSW parliament and only the second woman to enter government in Australia. This portrait hung near the entrance door of the club, at 77 King Street, for over 20 years.
