Mining camp, possibly Victorianc 1855-60

by Attributed to David Tulloch

This picture of a mining camp is attributed to David Tulloch, illustrator and engraver, who is known to have made sketches of the Victorian goldfields. In the foreground stands a gold-washing cradle, typical of the period, and sawn tree trunks used for damming the nearby creek. There is also a mine shaft, with the winch set up for hauling diggings to the surface.

This work may have been painted very early in the excavation of a new goldfield, as the impact of mining upon the landscape was far greater than this idyllic scene depicts.
