May Gibbs experimented with different designs and hand-drawn letters before choosing this illustration for the title page of her enduring children’s book Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. The timid-looking gumnuts will encounter the big bad banksia men, the wicked Mrs Snake and the wise old kookaburra on their ‘adventures wonderful’.
