Black and white plan of proposed bridge for Sydney Harbour.

Proposed North Shore bridge & other plans 1894-1899

By Benjamin Crispin Simpson

Government Architect Francis Greenway first proposed a bridge across Sydney Harbour to the North Shore in 1815. Later proposals ranged from floating, pontoon and swing bridges to high level and seven span bridges. Tunnels and even filling in the harbour were also mooted. Displayed here are some of the ideas that were considered prior to Bradfield’s successful arch bridge design.
