[Proposed Sydney Harbour Bridge, ca.1903] / Norman Selfe Design, R. M. Robinson Mech. Del., Herbert Beecroft Pinxt. ca.1903

By Norman Selfe

This suspension bridge was designed by Norman Selfe, one of Sydney’s best-known engineers during the 1880s and 90s. A proponent of the city railway and other Sydney infrastructure improvements, Selfe proposed many bridge solutions. His urban visions were prominently featured in the 1909 royal commission on the planning of Sydney. This 1903 design for a harbour bridge from Dawes Point to McMahons Point was accepted by the NSW Government following a government competition but was never constructed.
