Ure Smith’s flat 1939
Norman Carter has depicted the interior of Sydney Ure Smith’s Potts Point flat in 1939. He shows the furnishings, along with a view outside the window of a lush bush garden and distant buildings. A filled bookcase with objets d’art is seen on the right, and a framed artwork hangs on the wall.
Publisher and artist Ure Smith was a friend of Carter’s. Their correspondence is held at the Library. Smith’s publications Art in Australia and The Home had a significant role in supporting Australian art. His books and magazines contained outstanding artwork and colour printing — these set new standards for Australian advertising and provided work for artists.
