Mapping the route
This map, in the handwriting of Captain James Cook, shows the discoveries made in the Southern Ocean up until 1770. It includes the tracks of Tasman in 1642, Bougainville in 1767, Captain Samuel Wallis (HMS Dolphin 1766-68) and Cook's own Endeavour voyage of 1770.
Written on the back of the map is the following: 'Captain Cook's opinion of the rout the Resolution and Adventure ought to take to explore the Southern Ocean, humbly submitted to the consideration of the Earl of Sandwich.' The proposed route is shown in yellow.
