Rayner Hoff: The Life of a Sculptor

With Deborah Beck

Rayner Hoff is best known for his sculptures on the Anzac War Memorial in Hyde Park, but little is known about his personal life.

Deborah Beck will talk about her new biography of Hoff, exploring his eventful life in the UK, his reasons for coming to Australia in 1923, and his meteoric rise in the Sydney art world.

Illustrated with revealing family photos, Beck’s talk will describe Rayner Hoff’s impact in Australia. He became a much respected head of the National Art School, designed the original Holden lion badge, won the Wynne Prize in 1927, and befriended luminaries like artist Norman Lindsay, and poet and journalist Mary Gilmore.
