Where Australia Collides with Asia

With Ian Burnet

Ian Burnet returns to the Library to deliver a Bitesize lunchtime talk on his latest book, Where Australia Collides with Asia. Ian will discuss Alfred Russel Wallace’s discovery of the biogeographical boundary between the fauna of Asia and Australasia when he crossed the narrow strait between Bali and Lombok. Tectonic plate movement brought these disparate worlds together and it was Wallace’s Letter from Ternate that forced Charles Darwin to finally publish his landmark work On the Origin of Species.

Ian discusses his research which saw him using the original diaries, letters and publications to tell a remarkable story of natural history and adventure.
