Curator Talk: Maps from the National Library of Scotland

With Chris Fleet

This fully-illustrated talk will use selected maps of Scotland over the last five centuries to provide insights into the history of Scotland. The focus will be on the changing drivers behind the maps over time, including the Jacobite Risings, the clearances, emigration, urbanisation, industrial growth and decline, recreation and travel. It will also look at the various cartographic special collections and archives held by the Library, and work to make them more available in recent years.

Chris Fleet is Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh where he has worked since 1994. His main work has focused on digital mapping, and making historic maps available online. He has also actively researched and spoken on Scottish map history, and is the co-author of a number of popular books on Scottish mapping.
