Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the event “Digger Artists” has now been cancelled
Curator Talk with Elise Edmonds
In the early 1920s, an exhibition of hand-coloured war photographs toured Australia. Australians serving in the various theatres of war took most of these photographs which were reproduced, enlarged and hand-coloured by ‘digger artists’ at Colarts Studios in Melbourne.
Colarts publicised widely that they employed male ‘digger artists’ (returned servicemen) to complete technical work traditionally done by female retouchers and colourists. Colarts, one of many companies to employ returned servicemen, went out of business during the Depression.
