Dr Bing Chen on G.E. Morrison: An Australian in Late Imperial China

Dr Bing Chen is an Assistant Professor at the School of Foreign Languages at Peking University, Beijing. Join Dr Chen as she argues that G.E. Morrison’s career in China can be divided into two stages: first as the China Correspondent for the The Times from 1897 to 1912, and then after the revolution as the chief political advisor to Yuan Shikai, the first President of the Republic of China.

Dr Chen will discuss her research into Morrison's connection with the Reform Party in the Qing Government, his representation of China and his attitude to China's adoption of Westernizing reforms.

Dr Chen is the author of  China Redefined – GE Morrison’s China Reports of the Late Imperial China (1897-1912) (Fujian Education Press, 2017). She conducted her research in the Mitchell Library, and is currently translating Morrison's reports into Chinese.
