The evening will begin with drinks and canapés and a viewing of Captain James Cook’s original handwritten observations of the Transit from June 1769. Senior Curator of the Mitchell Library, Paul Brunton, will host.

May Gibbs' seminal Snugglepot and Cuddlepie was published in 1918, immediately following by several more Gumnut books. In August 1924, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie were transformed into Bib and Bub a comic strip first appearing in Sydney's Sunday News and Adelaide's Mail.
Bib and Bub (running until 1967) and strip Tiggy Touchwood (1925 to 1932) reflect May Gibbs' interaction with the events and activities around her. Their development is complex, as the comic strips illustrations and text were recycled, and the format varied from city to city.
Stewart, beginning with research for an exhibition in 2004, used the dozens of boxes of notes, correspondence, original drawings, cuttings and proofs of Gibb's comic scripts held in the Mitchell Library.
Stewart describes the variety of characters in the comics, how the original artwork was transformed into the final printed comic, Gibb's use of language, spelling and punctuation and her innovative recycling of themes.

The State Library of NSW has some fascinating Australian and European artists’ books in its collections. Difficult to define as a genre, it is widely recognised that artists’ books are consciously created as works of art. Having their origins in the European avant-garde of the early twentieth century, the format is often challenging and even subversive. Come along and see some of our artists’ books for yourself.

Join two Library Fellows for a fascinating night learning about a diverse range of research and ideas.
Dr Amanda Kaladelfos will discuss her project, Citizens of Mercy: Bushrangers, Punishment and Public Opinion in colonial NSW, which examined popular conceptions of crime and punishment in the late colonial period. Her project looked at the way ordinary citizens conceived of law and justice, by examining their vigorous protests and organised opposition to the use of the death penalty in the punishment of Australian bushrangers. Amanda is the 2010 David Scott Mitchell Fellow.
Mr Jesse O’Neill will present from his project Print Culture in New South Wales: 1795-1835. He will discuss the emergence of early design practices in the Sydney Gazette Office, focusing on the years 1803–1807. Mr O’Neill is interested in the physical nature of printed artefacts: typefaces, papers, bindings, etc., and how they communicate meaning. The Mitchell Library’s collections are obviously prime source material for such a project. Jesse is the 2010 Merewether Fellow.

Peter Macinnis is a story-teller who enjoys knowing and sharing the how and why of things. Like every story-teller, his greatest reward comes when a reader or listener asks "what happened next?" or says "I want to know more!" He likes to play role model, encouraging youngsters to read and later, to write and tell lively Australian stories of their own.
Stories have a magic, a logic, a fascination, and in this, the National Year of Reading, he is vacillating between enlivening the young and telling stories for all ages.
He will discuss the slug that lived on his desk for ten months; what to do when caught hoovering a tree in the bush; the Germans who fostered Australian science; Lewin's beating sheet; Dampier's hippopotamus; platypus eggs; one day at the Old Bailey in January 1787; a few other things-and how to weld these into a stirring tale.

The Library has an extraordinary collection of photographic albums, from intimate personal records to a hefty tome intended for Queen Victoria.
Photo albums first became popular with the arrival of cartes-de-visite, small photographs (11.4 x 6.4 cm) produced by professional studios in the 1860s. With changes in technology, the size and function of the photo album changed. By the late nineteenth century, amateur photographers began accumulating personal histories with their own images of family and friends at play and around the home.
Join Alan Davies, the Library’s Curator of Photographs, discussing how after a century and a half, the photo album continues to preserve our most precious memories.

The use of satire to expose foolishness or wrongdoing can take many forms. Shakespeare refers to it as ‘wit larded with malice’ and the writings of Jonathon Swift come immediately to mind. It inspires prose and poetry and is a tool of dramatists, cartoonists, columnists and graphic artists. Satire may be wild exaggeration but invariably carries at least the germ of truth. While its bluntness is softened by humour, the ridicule is invariably and penetratingly critical. A panel of speakers, including Edmund Capon, Cathy Wilcox and Geordie Williamson, will explore the use of satire across a range of forms.

Can we still talk about eternity in the era of capitalist modernity? How can we understand the persistent desire for eternity in a time where the predominant political objective is the control of the lives of people?
Professor Kiarina Kordela (Macalester College, Saint Paul, Minnesota) will address these questions in her presentation ‘Secular Eternal Life and Immortality’ by distinguishing between infinity and immortality as a way of conceiving biopolitics. Professor Miguel Vatter (UNSW) will explore in ‘Sex, Marriage and Eternal Life’ how the key to the fulfilment of the political potential of the human species is contained in the dialectic between the natural and the social dimensions of sexual relations. Australia is famous for its spectacularly erratic climate, so with human-induced climate change thrown in the mix, how can we prepare for the turbulent times ahead? A crucial part of the solution lies in understanding Australia’s climatic past.
The further back in time we can go, the better we can understand the true range of our region’s climate variability. In Australia, weather records only cover the last 100 years but climate researchers and historians at the University of Melbourne have used a range of sources to extend our climate record back to 1788.
Come along to find out how the Southeastern Australia Recent Climate History (SEARCH) team used archival documents from national and state libraries along with natural indicators like tree rings, coral and ice cores to piece together our climate history.
SEARCH project leader Dr Joelle Gergis will take you through a reconstruction of south-eastern Australia’s rainfall variations all the way back to first European settlement, and highlight some of the first-hand descriptions and artworks inspired by the epic droughts and floods that have shaped our nation. She’ll also let you know how to get involved in a new ‘citizen science’ project to help write our nation’s climate history.

Many books have been trumpeted as changing the world. Charles Darwin’s On the origin of species, first published in 1859, really did. Darwin had thought through his famous theory of natural selection much earlier but had been wary of publishing and was forced into it. The book sold out in a week and first editions are scarce.
The State Library has a near pristine first edition formerly belonging to Darwin’s great grandson. Paul Brunton, Senior Curator, will show this volume and speak about Darwin and the book’s remarkable story.
