Herbals are primarily medicinal and culinary herbs. Their properties and benefits were used the by the ancient Greeks and are still used today. The 16th and 17th centuries produced many illustrated printed books that were the precursor to the modern botanical and pharmaceutical textbooks. Flower books came to prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries with significant works by Redoute, Curtis, Bauer, Hookder Lindley, Sowerby, Sweet and Thornton.
The State Library of NSW holds many original and facsimile editions of these beautifully illustrated books. Join the staff of the Library's rare books team for a meander through herbs and flowers.
