La Grande Illusion

1937, 114 mins

Digital restoration of a classic film with soundtrack.

La Grande Illusion (also known as The Grand Illusion) is a 1937 war film directed by Jean Revoir, and is regarded by critics as one of the masterpieces of French cinema.

Set in a World War I German P.O.W. camp, two captured French soldiers, the aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and the working-class Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin) plot to escape. The film raises questions regarding the futility of war, and celebrates the global humanity that transcends national, racial and economic boundaries, suggesting that our common experiences should prevail above national divides, and therefore, war.
