National Biography Award Lecture 2018: 'Unauthorised'

With Tom DC Roberts

Tom DC Roberts’ gripping biography of Australia’s first media magnate, Keith Murdoch, titled Before Rupert: Keith Murdoch and the Birth of a Dynasty, won the National Biography Award in 2017.

In this year’s lecture, Tom explores how his ‘unauthorised’ biography of Sir Keith compares to previous ‘approved’ biographies, and how other subjects who have also had multiple biographers have had very different ‘lives’ created as a result. Tom is currently working on a new, international edition of Before Rupert that will tell the story of how Keith Murdoch's influence endures around the world. Focused on the relationship between Rupert Murdoch and Donald Trump, it will explore questions of biographical inheritance in family dynasties.

Tom DC Roberts is a media and political historian, biographer and researcher.  With a passion for research and a reputation for dogged delving in archives around the world, Tom has helped journalists, broadcasters and publishers achieve success with dozens of projects. His latest book, co-written with Peter Oborne, How Trump Thinks: His Tweets and the Birth of a New Political Language, was published by Head of Zeus in May 2017. His next work, The Murdoch Gene, will be published internationally by IB Tauris/Bloomsbury Academic in 2019.
