Out of the Vaults: French Surrealism on Bastille Day

Past Event

Friday, 14 July 2017 - 5:30pm to 7pm

... this falsely triumphal and multicoloure
cortège is definitely nothing other than the
burial of a cadaverous and mummified age.

This quote from the 1925 Surrealist Manifesto illustrates how dark the world view had become for some French writers in the wake of the First World War. Join us for this special Bastille Day event where we will bring out rare surrealist and symbolist texts donated to the Library by Randolph Hughes. Curator Geoff Barker will discuss Hughes’ life and the background to some of these texts.

Drinks and light refreshments included.
