The Riddle of the Rivers with Paul Brunton: Charles Sturt and the Riddle of the Rivers, 1828-29, 1829-30 and 1844

Join the Library's Emeritus Curator, Paul Brunton OAM, as he takes us on a journey following three intrepid explorers and fascinating individuals who, under trying conditions, tried to solve this riddle: John Oxley, Charles Sturt and Thomas Livingston Mitchell.

This lecture: Following on from Oxley, Sturt attempted to solve the riddle. He found the Darling and Murray Rivers, showing them to be navigable, and followed the latter to Lake Alexandrina, walking across the sand hills to the south coast of the continent. From the Darling, he made several expeditions north and north-west in pursuit of the inland sea but was finally stopped by the sand dunes of the Simpson Desert.
