The Riddle of the Rivers with Paul Brunton: John Oxley, The Inland Sea, 1817-18

Join the Library's Emeritus Curator, Paul Brunton OAM, as he takes us on a journey following three intrepid explorers and fascinating individuals who, under trying conditions, tried to solve this riddle: John Oxley, Charles Sturt and Thomas Livingston Mitchell.

This lecture: Unable fully to trace the Lachlan and Macquarie Rivers, which had been previously been located by G.W. Evans, Oxley formulated a theory of an inland sea of which he was ‘in the immediate vicinity’ and concluded ‘the interior of this vast country is a marsh, and uninhabitable’. Nonetheless, he found the rich Liverpool Plains and the Hastings River and its estuary, Port Macquarie, and provided the first detailed description of the inland.
