AUSTRALIA'S FRENCH CONNECTION: ALEXIS BERGANTZ
Baudin, d’Entrecasteaux and La Pérouse are familiar names to many: names that recall early French interests in the South Seas.
But Australia’s French connection continued long after the voyages of discovery. This talk retraces the journey of a research project that looked at French migration through to a cultural history of the idea of France in Australia, highlighting a range of political and personal meanings that France has had in people’s lives.
Alexis Bergantz recently submitted his PhD thesis in the School of History at the Australian National University. His project is a cultural history of the idea of France in Australia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
