Designing a World-class Performing Arts Space

With Pamela Clements

It is not widely known that the competition for the Sydney Opera House required the largest hall to accommodate symphony concerts and grand opera. This presentation will explore Jørn Utzon’s architectural design process for the Major Hall, how he worked with world-leading theatre and acoustics consultants to integrate their advice into the architecture, and how the design responded to the internally contradictory design brief and to the client’s changes to the brief during the project.
